The Power of .edu, .gov and .mil Links

If you didn’t know, .edu (educations), .gov (government), and .mil (military) backlinks are coveted due to the high trust rank they have within Google. Most .edu, .gov and .mil sites have quality inbound links, have been online for years and years and are a credible source of information to the search engines and to the community.

It is safe to say that these links are "power links" and can do a lot for your site within the search engines.

Link Popularity - A measure of the quantity of sites that link to your site.

Link Popularity is a factor in determining PageRank.

PageRank measure's a web page's importance.

PageRank is part of what is used to determine where pages are ranked in Google search results (SERPs).

PageRank thinks of links as votes, where a page linking to another page is casting a vote.

Google looks at the importance of the page that contains the link.

Pages with higher PageRank have more weight in "voting" with their links than pages with lower PageRank.

Pages that are important are probably better authorities in leading web surfers to better sources, and pages that have more links are likely to be less discriminating on where they're linking.

Search engines are always trying to provide the most relevant results for visitors search queries.

They analyze the linking structure.

Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on pages' relative importance.

Google describes PageRank:
"PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important".

In other words, a PageRank results from a "ballot" among all the other pages on the World Wide Web about how important a page is. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it ("incoming links"). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

Google assigns a numeric weighting from 0-10 for each webpage on the Internet; this PageRank denotes your site’s importance in the eyes of Google. The scale for PageRank is logarithmic like the Richter Scale and roughly based upon quantity of inbound links as well as importance of the page providing the link.

In addition, Google spiders these "importent" sites very frequently.  A link placed today will be found in a few short days and the power link will be attributed to your site as an inbound link quickly, providing you with enhanced SERPs results (higher ranking).

Getting these links today will result in higher search page ranking quickly.  Higher search page ranking will deliver your website more traffic and more sales.
